Bonneville Salt Flats

After spending a couple of days unpacking, we were ready to hit the road to see what SLC and Utah have to offer. The easy choice for our first stop were the Bonneville Salt Flats. For months, Manfriend had been talking about his desire to walk to the middle of the salt flats where all you could see was white salt and mountains for miles.

Unfortunately, little did we know that the salt flats flood in the winter. Not deep, mind you, but enough where our boots would’ve been soaked. While it was disappointing that we couldn’t walk or drive on them, the water created this incredible mirror image of the mountains and the blue sky above.

Driving on Route 80 West past the Great Salt Lake, you start to come across what looks like sand or snow, but it’s actually just 30,000 acres of salt. Three quarters of the way to Wendover, UT, you’ll see a rest area on the right – stop there for bathrooms and a first glimpse at the salt flats. Then, continue on to Exit 4 (just before Wendover), take a right off the off-ramp, and drive a few miles down the road to the center of the salt flats.

The Bonneville Salt Flats has hosted speed races since the early 1900s – every September you can watch as people try to break land speed records… we’ll definitely be back for this!

I tried to get Manfriend to lick the ground to see if it was REALLY salt (90% of the flats are common table salt!), but he refused. Jury is still out, but I’m getting my margarita glass ready!
